Broadhurst Clough Wetland Planting Event- 24/03/07
This event took place at Broadhurst Clough and involved members from the local residents group J.A.G, local councillors and members of the public as part of the Wildabout Manchester and 100 Days Campaign. A litter pick of the site was followed by a wetland planting session around the wetlands created by Groundwork Manchester, Salford & Trafford in 2006. 600 plants were planted, including Water Mint, Devil’s Bit Scabious and Self Heal, which will add to the local population of Yellow Flag Iris and other plants growing in the area. Once the plants are established, they will help to provide a natural wetland habitat for a variety of species and an environment that local people can enjoy.

Harpurhey Ponds: Willow Weaving & Nature Walk - 19/03/07
These events took place during the week starting 19/03/07 at Harpurhey pond. School groups from Harpur Mount Primary School enjoyed making willow domes with the help from Melvin Rutter, a Leeds based water ecologist who has also installed a natural reed bed at the site. The children also enjoyed a nature walk and talk focusing on The River Irk and the pond, which included discussing the negative effect fly tipping and littering can have on Britain’s waterways, looking at natural flora and fauna and tree bark rubbing. One group of children were lucky enough to see a kingfisher, which darted across the pond.

These events were a huge success in helping to educate children about respect for the countryside by showing them the importance of their local heritage.

Harpurhey Pond: Aquatic Biodiversity Event - 11/03/07
This event took place at Harpurhey Pond and involved the King William 4th Angling Society. The aim of this event was to remove water lilies from Harpurhey pond to transplant into Bottom Billy, which currently has none.

Harpurhey pond is covered with lilies during the summer months, which can be good for invertebrates and fish, however it can also reduce oxygen levels in the water and create a big stink! Through removing and transplanting the water lilies from one pond to the other, the quality of both ponds will be enhanced. By thinning the lilies in Harpurhey pond, the water quality will improve and by introducing lilies to Bottom Billy, a more diverse habitat for pond life will be formed. In order to control the spread of the water lilies in Bottom Billy, the plants have been put into Hessian sacks and sunk into the water.

Baileys Wood Clean up & Bird Box Making - 27/ 02/ 07
This event took place at Baileys Wood, Charlestown. The event involved Volunteering UK and Student CSV with students from Manchester University and a group of volunteers from KPMG.

The aim of this event was to clean the rubbish from this important woodland, for the benefit of the community and to encourage people to use this green space in a positive way. We managed to remove several truck loads of rubbish, which included tyres, carpets and hypodermic needles and cleared a good section of land at the entrance to the wood. There is plenty of scope for further clean ups in this area as Baileys Wood has a severe problem with fly tipping and litter.
