Welcome to the Irk Valley!!
North Manchester's environment is about to change. Peoples perceptions
are about to change.
The time is Now!
The Irk Valley stretches from Collyhurst to Higher Blackley,
and across the City from Crumpsall to Moston. Significant
investment will result in major environmental improvements
across a previously neglected landscape.
Working in partnership with local people and lots of different
agencies, the Irk Valley project aims to provide safe, comfortable
countryside links that will provide long-term benefits for
both people and wildlife. Explore the site and find

Following the success of
the of the St Michael’s and
Angel Meadow history project (see the St Michael’s
page for information) the Irk Valley project began to look
at replicating the idea in Blackley Forest and Blackley Vale,
and also the Collyhurst Village area.
An exhibition at North City Library
was held in January 2006 which displayed the St Michael’s
and Angel Meadow history project and CD-rom, recent developments
in the Irk Valley, the Moston Vale Newlands development
and the Moston Vale History project.
4th June 2006 - In conjunction with
the BBC Springwatch program St Michael’s and Angel
Meadow was a key event location in Manchester. A number
of fun family focussed activities took place and were publicised
on Northwest Tonight, local radio and the BBC Springwatch
program. This successful event was repeated in June 2007
and it is estimated that 20,000 people visited the range
of events in the City Centre including those at St Michaels
Flags.
As part of the 2007 event two “Wild Walks” were
held along the River Irk led by David Haley from Manchester
Metropolitan University. The Irk Valley walk took place on 19th
August 2007 and despite the overcast day 63 people attended. It
could not have been planned better as a steam shunt train
went along the Metro Link track and an adult sparrow hawk
hovered overhead, all while we stood on Sandhills. To top
it all off a vintage red London Bus ferried walkers back
to Victoria Station. |
