March Clean-Up Day a Success
By Adrian Monaghan, Friends of Angel Meadow

I met Mike Wingfield on the overcast morning of March 20th to put up abanner on Angel Street, advertising the clean-up day which was due to start in les than an hour. Given the weather, we didn’t hold out much hope of people turning up to the event, but things moved very quickly: before we knew it, the clean-up wqs underway! Tim Sedgewick acted as project manager for the Friends Group, guiding people to the various target areas as they arrived on site.

Everyone was equipped with bin bags, gloves and park maintenance tools or used-needle bins and all took part in the clean-up with great enthusiasm. The results of everybody’s efforts were clearly realised by the time the rain started and we adjourned to the Marble Arch pub for our gratefully received free chip butties!

There was a great sense of community spirit in taking part in the clean-up day. The weather was typically British, it was early on a Saturday morning and there was a lot of work to be done, yet we all pulled together to do something which I think we should all be proud of.

35 volunteers attended.

This was quite possibly the first time that Angel Meadow and St Michael’s Flags has ever witnessed a concerted effort by local residents, Manchester City Council, local councillors and local businesses to ensure its preservation for the use of present and future generations.

I hope we can all pool our resources together again in the future!
